Mercury inspired candle holders

triple

So I was cruising through Pintrest this past week and I came across these molted silvery candle holders called mercury glass. I loved the look and had to give my try at them. I wanted to create some decor for my upcoming wine party and these just fit the bill. Hopefully I have enough and they can be nice party gifts.

Supplies you will need:

  • Glass jars.Β I found some old glass candle holders that were from previously used candles and I found a 12 pack votive holders at Michaels for $4.99.
  • Krylon looking glass spray (I found mine at Walmart but you can also order it from Amazon here) Note: To get this look you do need the looking glass spray. The chrome is much duller compared to this spray.
  • spray bottle with mixture of half water half vinegar
  • masking tape

I started by masking off the top with masking tape and then put newspaper around the rest.

I also tried giving a few of the votives a pink color by dabbing the inside with some pink paint with a sea sponge. Up close you can see a difference but farther back you can’t tell.

I then brought them out to the garage and sprayed the inside with the water mixture. Then went the first coat of spray paint. The paint is VERY runny and don’t panic when most just runs to the bottom. It will take many coats to achieve this look. The more solid you want it to look the more coats of paint you will need to do.

I found out this paint really doesn’t like the cold much. Right now it’s about 20 degrees here and because it was spray paint I brought it to the garage. I noticed the paint wasn’t drying much so I brought it into our sunroom (we have a small heater in there) and that worked much better. I did get into a little trouble for doing this though πŸ™‚

They didn’t turn out how I expected them but I LOVE them… they look so nice with a candle lit in them. You can get some color to them if you add a colored tea light πŸ™‚

I ended up putting some beads, charms and wire around some of them to dress them up even more.

I also found out that the wider jars were much easier to spray. I love this technique and I think I maybe running out to get more paint (I used the entire can for these 14 holders). Now to scour the house for some empty glass jars πŸ™‚

Have you tried this yet? What objects did you find to paints? Comment below.
