Chalk Paint Armoire – Office redo part 1

After surfing Pinterest one day I really started to hate my office. I have been working from home for about 18 years and I think my office furniture is about that old too! It’s in good shape but it’s pretty boring laminated office stuff. So I decided it was time to dress it up and give this place a little life, I am in the creative field and it’s about time my office reflected that!

Before photo, yes as you can see my shelf fell off the wall so that was just another reason I have to fix this place up.

Now the other thing is that I have NO budget to be doing this. There are so many other things around the house that are in need of more attention than my office so I’m doing this on the cheap. I’ve been scouring Craigslist and the sell boards on Facebook and I found this armoire. It was in really nice shape and I almost didn’t paint it because it was in great condition. BUT I wanted some color in here so a painting I went.

before

I used chalk paint on this, the same process that I used on my master bathroom cabinets, in fact, same base color too.

first-coat

I just love using chalk paint, no sanding required! I used 2 coats on this, then sanded a few spots to give it a worn-in look.

stencil

After the 2 coats dried I added a stencil to the two top panels. I used my silhouette machine to make the stencil out of vinyl. Lightly stuck it on and then dab painted the white.

After the stencils were dry I added a white paint glaze on top. I used white acrylic paint and then glaze at a 50/50 mixture. I painted it on, waited a few minutes and then wiped off areas with a rag. I then finished it off with some glass knobs from Target, which I love!  I also added a little saying on the side that says Wish it, Dream it, Do it. I bought that a few months ago on Zulily and it became my inspiration for going in the shabby chic direction.

finished

So cost for this awesome piece:

  • armoire – $30
  • Knobs – $30
  • Inspirational hanging – $9
  • Paint – no cost, items I had

I’m very happy with it and I’m also excited to get this transform going! I also really like having the different spaces for storing items. Next up I think is trying to change the laminate on my desk, no clue how I am going to do that yet 🙂

I like how rustic the cabinet it turned out. I’ve read about wallpaper use to decorate cabinets and I was thinking of doing it until I found your post. I want a rustic vibe to my cabinet and I’m confused now on which one to go for. Have you tried using wallpaper on cabinets? Can you share your thoughts about it?
